Wat_er We doing? Drought Documentary
My 8th grade class banded together to create a documentary about the severity of California's drought. Many products came out of it, including a 30 minute documentary, two short water saving tip videos, and a water themed stained glass painting.
To begin with the documentary, each student was assigned a group of four and a topic for their chapter. These chapters would explain the causes and solutions for California's drought. Our goal as a class was to convey that there is a responsibility between all of us to be more smart with our water use. My group of four was Mckinna, Marino, Carter, and I. We each had different jobs. Mckinna was our group's director, Marino was our group's media wrangler, Carter was our group's director of photography/editor, and I was our group's writer. All of us got information for our products by reading articles, watching short videos, listening to guest speakers, and going on field trips. Our chapter was about where we get our water from, so we had to primarily get information for that topic. We had a lot of shots of reservoirs and the water reclamation process. Our group also made two water saving tip videos. Marino and Mckinna worked on one that encouraged people to put a brick in their toilet to displace water, and thus save 10 gallons per flush. Carter and I made a video that explains that watering your car on grass puts soapy water down the storm drain, and then the ocean. A better alternative is going to a car wash that recycles water. They both have images or videos of those better alternatives. This project left an impact on me in many ways. One of those ways being my water use habits. I avoid using "thirsty" products, like water bottles and extra paper. From a group work standpoint, I had to deal with getting a job I didn't want at first. I talked to teachers about switching, but the person who got the job I wanted was really disappointed. I decided to give the job to them instead. What you see to the right, is the stained glass product Marino, Carter, Mckinna, and I made together. We used plexiglass, liquid leading, and glass paint. We auctioned them off at our school exhibition. At this link, you can watch the full documentary, and each water saving tip. I also wrote the descriptions you see on the home page! My chapter starts at 10:00 and ends at 13:15. Our water saving tips are called Dontwashyuourcarongrass and #brickit! water.carterharrison.com |
